Yesterday it was announced that Rob Marshall will be bringing Into The Woods onto the big screen for Disney. Since it is my favorite musical of all time, I have cast the show for him. You have several options, Mr. Marshall. There is the Hollywood choice, the Broadway choice and the "can they sing?" choice, plus a few other suggestions. You are welcome.
Note: I was going to do a long detailed explanation of why I picked the folks I picked, but since this post will probably only be of interested to me, Shephard and the few other theater nerds I know, I will instead quote favorite lyrics from the show beneath each character choices.
NARRATOR: John Lithgow, David Hyde Pierce, Stanley Tucci
"And it came to pass, all that seemed wrong
was now right, and those who deserved to
were certain to live a long and happy life."
CINDERELLA: Rosario Dawson, Sutton Foster, Hayley Atwell
"Although how can you know
Who you are till you know
What you want, which you don't?"
JACK*: Andrew Rannells, Rupert Grint
"There are Giants in the sky
There are big tall terrible awesome scary wonderful
Giants in the sky"
THE BAKER: John C. Reilly, Roger Bart, Paul Rudd
"No more riddles.
No more jests.
No more curses you can't undo,
Left by fathers you never knew.
No more quests."
BAKER'S WIFE: Maya Rudolph, Katie Finneran, Christina Hendricks
"If the thing you do
Is pure in intent,
If it's meant,
And it's just a little bent,
Does it matter?"
LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD*: Kristin Bell, Chloe Moertz
"And take extra care with strangers,
Even flowers have their dangers.
And though scary is exciting,
Nice is different than good."
CINDERELLA'S PRINCE: Ewan McGregor, Dominic Cooper, Nathan Fillion
"Right and wrong don't matter in the woods,
Only feelings.
Let us meet the moment unblushed.
Life is often so unpleasant-
You must know that, as a peasant-"
RAPUNZEL: Cary Mulligan, Amy Spanger, Rosamund Pike
"I am no longer a child. I wish to see the world."
RAPUNZEL'S PRINCE: John Stamos, Alan Tudyk, Lee Pace
"Agony!
Far more painful than yours,
When you know she would go with you
If there only were doors."
THE WITCH: Michelle Pfeiffer, Donna Murphy, Susan Sarandon
"You're so nice.
You're not good,
You're not bad,
You're just nice.
I'm not good,
I'm not nice,
I'm just right.
I'm the Witch.
You're the world."
For the smaller parts, I'm only offering you one option, Mr. Marshall. Enjoy!
FLORINDA/LUCINDA: Casey Wilson and Michaela Watkins
"Never wear mauve at a ball...
Or pink."
CINDERELLA'S STEPMOTHER: Allison Janney
"Or open your mouth."
JACK'S MOTHER: Megan Mullally
"I wish my son were not a fool.
I wish my house was not a mess.
I wish the cow was full of milk.
I wish the house was full of gold-
I wish a lot of things..."
CINDERELLA'S MOTHER (voice only): Dolly Parton
"Do you know what you wish?
Are you certain what you wish
Is what you want?
if you know what you want,
Then make a wish."
CINDERELLA'S FATHER: Christopher Guest
"The closer to the family, the closer to the wine..."
RED'S GRANDMOTHER: Judi Dench
"The mouth of a wolf's not the end of the world..."
STEWARD: Tom Hollander
"A servant is not just a dog to a prince."
GIANT (voice only): Kristen Johnston
*These actors are all probably too old to play these parts and should probably be new, unknown actors, but they're pretty to look at so I included them anyways.

Excellent choices, I LOVE it!
ReplyDeleteSarandon would be a great choice for The Witch (Witches of Eastwick)
Ha ha ha!! We both like Paul Rudd!! Omg, I love Maya Rudolph, she'd be great! Ha, Ewan was on my early list!
John Stamos!! Omg, I love him, and Lee Pace!!
Yes! Allison Janney! So many fun choices!
Oh, Judi Dench.I love it.
Omg, I forgot about Kristen Johnston. She's SO funny.
And.. I love your David Hyde Pierce idea!
Now that is what I call a cast (and might I add, Cary Mulligan looks a lot like the animated Rapunzel, after her hair is cut - at least in that picture)!
ReplyDeleteThis is actually really cool news. This musical is a riot! :)
I like David Hyde Pierce for the Narrator, but I'd go with Josh Gads for Jack rather than Andrew Rannells. Either him or Chris Colfer. Andrew's so pretty, he should play Cinderella's Prince! I can't get Bernadette out of my head for the Witch, but Donna Murphy's the only one on your list that can actually sing that part. Those other ladies have lovely voices, but just aren't right for The Last Midnight. Catherine Zeta-Jones is another Witch possibility! Love Allison Janney for the Step-Mom! I like Ewan for the Baker rather than the Prince. Oh, this is so much fun, imagining the possibilities! Love, love, love this show!
ReplyDeleteApril: I totally agree with you about the Witch. Bernadette is the BEST and she could still play the role. If Rob Marshall is smart he'll keep her in it, but I do love your suggestion about CZJ.
ReplyDeleteHow cute would Nathon Fillion/Alan Tudyk "Agony" be?
ReplyDeleteYou read my mind.
